Description:
A POTM file extension is a slideshow template file in the Open XML used with the Microsoft PowerPoint software application that has macros enabled. POTM files are templates, and therefore contain all of the formatting necessary for a user to create a presentation by inserting the particular text, graphics, and images associated with a particular presentation. The background, formatting, layout, and style are all prepared and stored in a template file. POTM files are associated with Microsoft Office 2007 and 2010. Files of this type usually contain multiple slides, and the same template can be used to generate a multitude of PPTM files (the file extension used for a single PowerPoint file) with the same format. Prior to the 2007, it was not possible to save PowerPoint files in macro enabled format.

Technical Details:
The POTM file type is primarily associated with 'Power Point' by Microsoft Corporation. This is the new format for Microsoft Office documents. It is a combination of XML architecture and ZIP compression for size reduction.Microsoft promises the format will be open (published for anyone to use) and prior versions of Office, using components provided by Microsoft for Office 2000, XP, and 2003 will be available to perform document conversion. Remember that these are promises by Microsoft. We have yet to see the actuals. This format is not the same as the OpenDocument standard, also an XML-based standard being developed as a true open standard (see the OpenDocument Fellowship for more information).
