Compressed archive created with Igor Pavlov's 7-Zip file compression utility; uses open-source LZMA compression, which has a high compression ratio and can include strong AES-256 (256-bit) encryption; supports Unicode file names, archive header compression, and file sizes up to 16,000,000,000 GB.While 7z compression uses the LZMA method by default, the 7z format also supports the PPMD, BCJ, BCJ2, BZip2, and Deflate compression methods.

Technical Details:
A 7Z file extension is an archive file container in open source architecture that compresses and stores multiple files in one container. The file type was created by Igor Pavlov, and features heavy AES-256 bit security encryption, high compression ratios, and a large capacity, with the ability to hold up to 16 million terabytes of file data. While files of this type are highly compressible, they also take longer to compress in the program as compared to ZIP files. To maximize the compression speed, 7Z files use LZMA compression as the default format, because it can compress files at a rate of 1 megabyte per second, and decompress at a rate of up to 20 megabytes per second. 7Z files can also be compressed using the following formats: BCJ, BCJ2, BZip2, PPMD, and Deflate.
